Team NOVAK's Brushless Motor

The Revolutionary Brushless Motor System
Novak's new Brushless Motor System is sure to revolutionize the R/C car industry as it is designed specifically for R/C cars. The system will consist of a state of the art brushless motor combined with its own high-end electronic speed control. Three different models will be available: COMPETITION SYSTEM (#3000), REVERSIBLE SYSTEM (#3010), & HIGH-VOLTAGE REVERSIBLE SYSTEM (#3020). With a 30% higher efficiency rate than brush-type motors, users will reap many benefits, including much longer run times and greater power output. Furthermore, while typical brush motors require the high maintenance of frequent and costly motor rebuilds due to brushes, brush springs, and commutators wearing out, Novak's new Brushless Motor System requires virtually no maintenance. The space that was once used to enclose the commutator in a brush motor is used to generate more power in the Novak brushless motor. The energizing of the coils typically performed by the commutator is performed by an electronic speed control, which in turn eliminates electrical noise that can lead to radio glitching. The Novak brushless motor can attain higher RPM, and provide faster acceleration. Further benefits include no installation of motor capacitors or Schottky diodes on the motor.

Overall, the Novak brushless motor will provide greater efficiency, cost R/C car enthusiasts less money in rebuilds, provide more power and longer run times, and requires minimal maintenance.

The TEAM NOVAK SPY revealed
A Spy has been uncovered in the R/C community! Novak's newest speed control, the SPY Micro Reversible, is specifically designed for 1/24-1/18th scale R/C cars.
A Spy in our Midst Novak Electronics, Inc. admits to inserting a SPY into the R/C industry! An anonymous Novak source revealed that the SPY is Novak’s new micro-sized, forward/reversible speed control that is specifically designed for use with any 4-7 cell, 1/24 – 1/18 scale R/C car, such as HPI's Micro RS4.

Covert R & D stages allowed the SPY project to remain a well-kept secret. As a result of its specific design for smaller-scale R/C cars, the SPY is now Novak’s smallest and lightest speed control to date, measuring just 1.12in x 0.95in x 0.48in (28.45mm x 24.13mm x 12.06mm), and weighing a mere 0.51 oz. (14.4 g). HPI-type connectors are pre-wired for convenient installation. While its compact size may tempt racers who are on the lookout for the extra advantage found in a tiny, lightweight speed control, it is important to note that the SPY is not intended for use in R/C cars with 380 or 540-size (05) R/C motors.

The SPY includes the same standard features as all current Novak-manufactured speed controls: One-Touch Set-Up, Radio Priority Circuitry, Polar Drive Technology, Thermal Protection, Smart Braking, and Reverse Disable. While Novak ESCs are easily recognized by their bright orange case, the SPY deviates ever so subtly from this practice, yet still makes its Novak heritage apparent. A new translucent orange case is the SPY cover of choice, allowing anyone to take a glimpse into its inner working, while still keeping Novak’s technological secrets intact.

Like the application for which it is intended, the SPY has a smaller price tag than other speed controls currently manufactured for these smaller-scale cars. With a list price of , the SPY is a veritable bargain. Ready for assignment, the SPY is scheduled to begin shipping June 2002.

The GT7 is the newest competition speed control from Novak. Extensively tested by some of the world's best R/C drivers (Current IFMAR 4wd World Champion: Jukka Steenari, Brian Kinwald, and Greg Hodapp), the GT7 is one smooth speed control that's filled with some great new Novak features such as 7 factory-programmed throttle profiles, and On-Board Programming.
A Grand New Speed Control
There is a new speed control at the top of Novak Electronics’ Competition Line: the GT7. Available next month, the GT7 Programmable Racing Speed Control will sport all of the great features you have come to expect from Novak Electronics—and more.

The GT7 joins the ranks of Novak’s small-size speed controls. Measuring 1.37” x 1.11” x 0.66” (34.5mm x 28.3mm x 16.8mm), the GT7 is 30% smaller and lighter than Novak’s previous top-of-the-line competition speed controls, the Cyclone C2 and TC2, without compromising the electrical specifications.

Extensive testing with some of the world’s best drivers, including Brian Kinwald, Jukka Steenari, and Gregg Hodapp, helped Novak engineers fine-tune the speed controls' throttle response, and helped determine programming base values. Pleased with the final results, these top drivers declared the GT7 the smoothest speed control that they have ever used! As its name may imply, the GT7 includes 7 factory-programmed throttle programs, which will undoubtedly fulfill the needs of drivers of all skill levels. Programmable by design, the GT7 can also be customized specifically to match the driver’s preferences through Novak’s convenient new On-Board Programming, which allows the user to select one of seven throttle programs, as well as customize the GT7 without an external device. The One-Touch/Programming Button, along with a series of four different-colored LEDs, easily guides the user through the selection and customization process. Like programs 1-6, the GT7’s 7th program comes factory-set. It is this 7th program, however, that users may customize, and then store their newly created program in place of the original 7th program. If desired, the 7th program can always be reverted to the original factory-programmed values by performing the One-Touch Set-Up.

Drivers are empowered to create a program specifically for their racing purposes by having the ability to adjust the following parameters: 1 of 5 Standard Brake or 5 Drag Brake profiles, 7 Minimum Brake values, and 1 of 5 Drive Profiles (which encompasses Drive Frequency and Minimum Drive). With the ability to adjust these parameters, drivers can customize the speed control to meet their specific needs.

Another convenient new feature implemented in the GT7 is an external, multi-positionable, case mountable, power switch and power capacitor mounting bracket. This simply means that the user can slide the ESC’s power switch into several different positions on the ESC’s case in order to set it in the most ideal position that is convenient to the user. A mounting bracket for the power capacitor can also be slid into the case, which the capacitor can then be zip-tied to.

A continuous signal-checking circuitry confirms whether or not the ESC is receiving a signal from the receiver, while a Transmitter Check Mode checks whether the transmitter has enough “throw” in the forward and brake directions.

New to Novak speed controls are the Direct Solder Wiring Tabs that are found on the GT7. The benefits to having the solder tabs placed in this position are that they lower the on-resistance of the speed control, they lessen the possibility of getting a short-circuit underneath the board, and they are easier for users to solder onto than solder posts.

Along with all of the new Novak features, the GT7 includes all of the same standard features found in all current Novak-manufactured speed controls: One-Touch Set-Up, Radio Priority Circuitry, and Polar Drive Technology. Look for the GT7 in Novak’s new translucent orange case (like the SPY).

The GT7 is scheduled to begin shipping August 2002.
